• Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

in 1978 the orphanage was taken over by the National Zoological Gardens from the Department of Wildlife. A captive breeding program was launched in 1982. Since the inception of the program over 20 elephants have been bred here. The aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers.

Lake Gregory, situated just 2 km (1.3 miles) southeast of the town center of Nuwara Eliya, just behind the race course, is a recreational area in a scenic surrounding. At an elevation of around 1880 m (6170 feet) above sea level, Lake Gregory in the calley of Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's highest standing waterbody. Lake Gregory is an artificial waterbody, a reservoir formed by a dam built in 1874 across the river of Nanu Oya (also called Thalagala stream in its upper reaches), which drains the valley of Nuwara Eliya.
